RESEARCH INTERESTS

Dr. Crouter’s main research interests are in the area of measuring physical activity and energy expenditure in adults and youth using wearable physical activity monitors that have various sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes. Much of his work has been focused on improving how wearable devices are used to estimate energy expenditure and activity type in free-living youth and adults using machine learning algorithms. Currently, Dr. Crouter is working on the use of machine learning algorithms for classification of activity type and prediction of energy expenditure using accelerometer and gyroscope sensors worn at different body locations.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Dr. Crouter is the director of the Applied Physiology Laboratory at The University of Tennessee. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and has served on several committees for the ACSM. He is an associate editor for Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, and serves on the editorial board for the Journal for the Measurement of Physical Behaviors. Dr. Crouter has served on committees within the National Physical Activity Plan Alliance (U.S. report card for children and adolescents advisory committee), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research (development of a youth compendium of physical activities), and the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (dietary reference intakes for energy committee).

CURRENT FUNDING

Title: The Timing of Physical Activity for Pregnancy Hyperglycemia, a Randomized Crossover Trial

  • Funder: American Diabetes Association (11-22-ICTSN-29; 11/15/2022-11/14/2025)
  • Role: Co-investigator; PI: S. Ehrlich
  • Major Goals: This randomized crossover trial will examine the potential effects of the timing of physical activity (i.e., after breakfast vs. after dinner) on glucose across the 24-cycle in pregnant individuals with gestational diabetes or gestational glucose intolerance.

Title: Use of Accelerometer and Gyroscope Data to Improve Precision of Estimates of Physical Activity Type and Energy Expenditure in Free-Living Adults.

  • Funder: National Institutes of Health (R01DK129428-01A1; 05/15/2022-04/30/2026)
  • Role: PI; Co-PI: W. Ding
  • Major Goals: This project will develop and validate machine learning algorithms using raw accelerometer and gyroscope sensor data collected at the hip and wrist for use in free-living adults. These algorithms will be able to estimate energy expenditure and classify the type of activity being performed, significantly improving upon current methods that typically only use accelerometer data. These algorithms will have direct benefit to those examining dose response relationships between sedentary behaviors, physical activity and health outcomes in adults, in the physical activity and public health fields.

Title: Multilevel Physical Activity Intervention for Low Income Public Housing Residents.

  • Funder: National Institutes of Health (R01MD015165; 05/27/2021-02/28/2026)
  • Role: Consultant; PIs: L. Quintiliani and D. Bowen
  • Major Goals: Acting as a consultant for the duration of the project. A focus of this project will be to examine the efficacy of individual and environmental intervention strategies on the physical activity behaviors among low-income residents of Boston public housing developments.

Title: Neighborhood Risk Factors for Falls in the Elderly

  • Funder: National Institutes of Health (1RO1AG066492-01A1; 09/01/2020-04/30/2025)
  • Role: Co-I (PI of sub-contract); PI: W. Li
  • Description: This study investigates the differences in time and space use in relation to falls among older adults living in rural, suburban, and urban neighborhoods.

Title: Digital Health Supported Weight Management Intervention Delivered by Community Health Workers Among Public Housing Residents.

  • Funder: National Institutes of Health (1RO1CA238335; 02/14/2020-01/31/2025)

  • Major Goals: Acting as a consultant for the duration of the project. This project will examine the efficacy of using a computer-assisted counseling system for weight management in overweight/obese multicultural residents of Boston public housing developments

Title: Translating Basic Habituation Research to Childhood Obesity Treatment

  • Funder: National Institutes of Health (1RO1DK121360-01; 03/01/2019-02/31/2024)
  • Role: Co-investigator; PI: H. Raynor
  • Major Goals: This grant is testing a limited dietary prescription within an 18-month family-based multicomponent intervention on weight outcomes in children

Title: Novel Approaches for Predicting Unstructured Short Periods of Physical Activities in Youth

  • Funder: National Institutes of Health (R01HD083431-02; 06/06/2016-03/31/2021)
  • Role: PI; Co-PIs: W. Ding (UMass Boston) and E. Keogh (U.C. Riverside)
  • Description: This project will develop and validate machine learning algorithms using raw accelerometer data collected at the hip or wrist for use in youth. These algorithms will be able to detect the start and end times of free-living physical activity bouts, classify the type of activity being performed, and estimate energy expenditure, significantly improving upon current methods.
