Application Deadline for Graduate Teaching Certification Extended to August 14

The Tennessee Teaching and Learning Center in collaboration with the Graduate School is now accepting applications for the Graduate Teaching Certification Program.  

This program is designed to: 

• expose participants to the most current theories and practices regarding teaching and learning so as to better prepare them for the challenges of the 21^stcentury postsecondary classroom,

• prepare participants for faculty life at various kinds of institutions, and

• create a learning community of individuals from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. 

We believe involvement in the program will foster critical and reflective thinking about teaching and learning.  This is likely to improve the individual’s current practice which is of benefit to their students and UT.  

The 15-18 month program is open to any graduate student who is eligible to co-teach or act as the instructor of record at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and who has completed or plans to complete a seminar or course in teaching pedagogy.  

 The program is divided into three parts: 

1. First, there is an orientation to the GTC program.  It includes two workshops, one on one meetings with the director of the program, and completion of a classroom observation assignment directed by the TennTLC.

2. Second, participants will take in an advanced seminar on teaching and learning.  Meeting regularly, the cohort will engage in deep exploration of current theories and practices related to effective postsecondary instruction. Several topics will be covered including course design, student motivation, and how learning works.

3. In the final stage, students will be involved in asupervised teaching practicum where participants are able to integrate what they have learned into their own classrooms.

Applications will be accepted through Thursday, August 14, 2014 at 5:00pm. To apply, please complete the application form and the faculty recommendation letter found on our website and send these to fmcgaske@utk.edu.  You may also drop them off at 618 Greve Hall.  You will be notified of a decision by August 19, 2014.  Please note that we will make every effort to schedule each section of the seminar at times that are convenient for all accepted participants; however, this can be a challenge.  Thus acceptance into the program does not guarantee that we will be able to find a time that meets everyone’s needs.
