IRB Tips

Dear Graduate Researchers:

Three quick tips for filling out IRB applications:

1) Instead of referring to “study,” refer to “research study,” especially in the informed consent form, if applicable. For example, instead of stating “your participation in this study is voluntary…,” state, “your participation in this research study is voluntary.”

2) In the informed consent form, under contact information use 865-974-7697 as the telephone number for the Compliance Office. The previous number is apparently being phased out.

3) In the informed consent form, add your advisor’s name and contact information as an additional person who may answer questions about the research.

Those are some items that have come up in recent feedback from the IRB. Feel free to share similar “lessons learned” from your recent experience with the IRB.

Best,

Lars
