UT’s College of Law will host the “Title IX: History, Legacy, and Controversy” conference March 2-3. The Tennessee Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice is co-sponsoring the event along with Law Women.
The conference will further the discussion surrounding Title IX while honoring the legacy of former Lady Vols basketball coach Pat Summitt. It will address issues regarding athletics and education, sexual harassment and assault on campus, racial inequality in schools and athletics, inclusion of LGBTQ students, pay equity and compensation, and media coverage of Title IX issues.
Deborah Brake, John E. Murray Faculty Scholar and professor of law at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, will be the keynote speaker. Brake is a former senior counsel at the National Women’s Law Center as well as a leading expert in Title IX, with substantial experience litigating Title IX cases.
UT Women’s Athletics Director Emeritus Joan Cronan will give a tribute to Pat Summitt and address current issues regarding Title IX in athletics. Other speakers include leading law professors, practitioners, and scholars from related disciplines that specialize in Title IX including Becky Jacobs, Waller Lansden Distinguished Professor of Law; Amber Roessner, associate professor in the School of Journalism and Electronic Media; and Erin Whiteside, associate professor in the School of Journalism and Electronic Media.
The conference is free and open to the public. Attorneys are required to pay a $65 registration fee and will receive 10 continuing legal education (CLE) credits. Registering attorneys are encouraged to register by Feb. 24.
