Selecting a preferred name

The Graduate School recently sent information to current and incoming students regarding the process for establishing a preferred name in Banner. This allows a student to have grade rolls and class rosters have their preferred name listed, and they can also have the preferred name on the front of their VolCard. Current students wishing to have a preferred name on their VolCard will need to pay for a new VolCard, but incoming students who have established their preferred name before getting their VolCard can get that done as part of the receipt of their new VolCard.

To select a preferred name, students should follow the instructions at OneStop (onestop.utk.edu/contact-updates). Preferred names are limited to alphabetical characters, apostrophes, periods, and hyphens. The University of Tennessee, Knoxville reserves the right to deny a preferred first name if it contains inappropriate or offensive language, or is being used for misrepresentation
