Ed Howley served as a faculty member in the department from 1970-2007. He had the pleasure of working with excellent colleagues and students, and thoroughly enjoyed the balance of teaching, research, and service. He taught undergraduate courses in fitness testing and prescription, and undergraduate and graduate courses in exercise physiology. He was recognized for his teaching throughout his career. He published more than 60 research articles and continues to revise two textbooks: Fitness Professional’s Handbook (with B. Don Franks and later, Dixie Thompson) and Exercise Physiology (with Scott K. Powers). He served as president of the American College of Sports Medicine from 2002-2003 and as editor-in-chief of ACSM’s Health and Fitness Journal from 2005-2011. He continues to present lectures at professional meetings and enjoys the bonus retirement brings for more travel, golf, and time with family.
